Editorial Reviews

Dr. Picardi has produced a helpful handbook for those who aspire to leadership positions in their organizations. It is a careful blend of theory, practice, and examples. Leadership concepts are concisely presented and the book is easy to read. The chapters on situational and contingency leadership and leading a thriving organization by themselves make this book a worthwhile read.
-- Dr. Mark Koscinski Assistant Professor of Accounting Practice

The capacity of Leadership is the most important ingredient to organizational well-being and success. Leadership is a philosophy of use of power, a set of learnable, observable competencies, skills and behaviors. Anyone can develop themselves as a leader. You become a leader when people choose to follow you. There is no topic that has been written about as extensively. The newly authored, Leadership Essentials, offers the reader a wonderful smorgasbord of all things leadership. It is a perfect way to begin your leadership studies.
-- Leslie Yerkes, President, Catalyst Consulting Group, Inc.

While the world is combatting Covid-19 and, as a consequence, facing one of its worst health and financial crises, strong leadership is now required more than ever before at all levels and in all countries. Dr. Picardi’s work has arrived during a perfect storm exposing learners and practitioners of leadership to the essential aspects of leadership. There is much confusion in both the academic literature and popular press as to what constitutes ‘good and effective’ leadership. Dr. Picardi’s book takes the reader back to the basics and unpacks the many mysteries of this popular topic. This book covers the key concepts of leadership and makes a strong and timely contribution to a more comprehensive understanding of contemporary leadership.
Leadership Essentials You Always Wanted To Know
-- Prof. Dr. Franco Gandolfi, Georgetown University

This book is an important source of information on a topic which is ever more important in today's rapidly changing world where leadership is not an option for organizations to be able to navigate successfully and remain competitive.

This book represents an important guide for anyone who wishes to understand what are the key principles of leadership and to also better understand how they can improve their own leadership skills.
-- Dr David Forgaty, Enterprise Marketing Analytics Leader at Evernorth Corporation

A book that really does what it says on the tin. The Essentials of Leadership are truely covered as the author takes the reader on a journey through the recognised theoretical concepts and ideas in a way that makes then both interesting and relevant. It is good to see that the influence of power is not forgotten and that ethical leadership is considered at a time when many leaders are being faced with demonstrating their ability to create value for society as much as value for their shareholders. An essential title for any leader's bookshelf and one that adds true value to the associted discourse on Leadership Practice and its role in organisational success.
-- Dr. Gary Ramsden, Lincoln International Business School

For professionals interested in a better understanding of types of leadership and ways to become a more effective leader in normal times and times of change, this is an excellent book.

I can easily see Leadership Essentials You Always Wanted to Know by Dr. Carrie A. Picardi being used in corporate department meetings, retreats, noncredit classes, and seminars very effectively as it focuses on the important leadership models which can make us more effective leaders. A concise and well-explained book!
-- Reviewed By Randy B. Lichtman for Readers’ Favorite

An exceptional work on the foundation and practice of leadership within today's society. The author does a wonderful job in moving skillfully from the overall purpose of leadership, to the attributes & behaviors of those who are effective at it, onto the various situations that can arise within this area of management, with emphasis on the attributes needed to successfully handle them. What's most impressive to me is that all of this is covered in a concise, readable 200-page format, making it a 'go-to' resource for any college professor teaching a course on this subject. I highly recommend this dynamic, user-friendly text and plan on using it myself in the future.
-- Prof. Anthony Rondinelli
Department of Business Administration School of Liberal & Professional Studies Springfield Technical Community College

Dr. Picardi has created a remarkable text. She accomplishes the most difficult task of translating her mastery of the subject matter into a form suitable for undergraduate students (or anyone else, for that matter) interested understanding leadership. Her text is straightforward, accurate, and oriented toward a practical application of the material. This book is designed for those who value their time and wish to gain an understanding of leadership principles that can be effectively put into practice. Well done!

The key learning objectives and chapter summary makes internalizing the material an easy task.
-- Reo Oravec Host and Executive Producer of the SME showcase Show, Author, Speaker, Adjunct Professor of Discission Sciences

Dr. Picardi creates a monolithic learning path that enhances the student’s potential for success by building a model that is inclusive in all facets of both the leader and leadership within it’s role. Her focus on building the mindset, character and traits of a leader as foundations of a leader’s styles and role of impact; creates a platform for the student’s journey of understanding how a leader influences teams and an
organization’s performance. Her sequitur of the leader and leadership model is comprehensive to the point of filling the lacuna of leadership pedagogy and learning. As a recognized leader in business and entrepreneurship higher education, I recommend this book to anyone teaching a leadership course. It is one of the few leadership books I have read that has such a impactful journey of discovery and learning for the
benefit of the student.

I received this book at just the right time. I design and develop training programs and am currently researching data for a leadership program. I found the topics in this book to be very useful and will be able to apply much of the info into my program. While I wouldn’t utilize it for advanced leaders (i.e. C-Suites) I think it’s practical for entry-level leaders, or to keep as reference guide for mid-level managers. Chapters 2, 3, 7-9 will be used to shape quite a bit of my training.

The layout of the book is basic as it describes what leadership is, the attributes of leaders, The book cover the development of leadership behavior theory as well as a few other theories on leadership. Within each section you are provided with action steps to grow and develop ones leadership style. The chapters end with a summary of the important points and a quiz to test ones knowledge. I received a PDF of the book. Since this is a learning manual a hard copy would have been nice.

This book provides an exploration of how managers and employees work in groups for the completion of organizational objectives. Emphasis is placed on the growing dependency on understanding the behavior and personality of communities of practice (teams) in the workplace. The textbook equips students with insights regarding the ability to manage work teams, operate and navigate teams successfully, and obtain successful results via team dynamics. Researchers tell us that opportunities to succeed need to be more abundant in today’s workplaces; the author of this book is the proverbial knock and invitation for students to open that door.

Organizational Behavior Essential Matters! It will provide a strategic developmental framework for re-invigorating your employees to high-level success.
-- Denean Robinson
Instructor of Workforce Continuing Education

If you are going to buy one Organizational Behaviors book this year, this book, in my opinion, is it. And I’ve read a lot of books covering leadership, organizational behavior, and learning and development. In fact, this book covers all three of those topics and so much more. There are quizzes at the end of each chapter to check your knowledge. This book should be on the bookshelf of Business students, business teachers, leaders, L&D specialist, Human Resource Specialist, and those seeking to move up in a company. If you seek to optimize your team’s results, success, and dynamics, get this second edition of “Organizational Behavior Essentials You Always Wanted To Know.”
-- Shelly HarlanderNet Galley Reviewer"I'm recommending this book to colleagues who teach business. If you are a business student, an entrepreneur, or business owner, you'll want to pick up a copy, too.

I am none of the above and found myself interested in the chapters on finance, general management, HR, and marketing. Especially helpful are the quizzes and chapter summaries.

There is so much information that, whether you're starting out or plugging holes in your current knowledge, you'll learn something from this valuable text. It's an overview of business systems and essential components. (Which even I, not interested in business in the least, found fascinating and instructional.)"
-- Rosa SmithNet Galley ReviewerOh my goodness. So sorry for not responding. I have had unexpected injury and it's left me flat on my. back. Not how I like to operate. I'm leaning towards the Organizational Behavior online text by MacGraw Hill because in comparison to your text, I think my students will be more attracted to the pages as they appear online. Customer service wise, you topped them all. I did consider Pearson's book as well, but thought it was too sophisticated for my students. I think your text also was a tad above their heads. These are not the brightest and most motivated students.

Thank you for your professionalism. Now, if after teaching a semester with the MacGraw Hill book and it doesn't work out, I'll reach out to you again. You've been fantastic to work with!
-- Nancy DenneyFisher College

A compelling integration of theoretical and conceptual content, relevant process models, and real-world practices and resources.

The Four Books Address Every Blind Spot I Had as a Manager

After two years in a team lead role I asked my team for 360-degree feedback for the first time. The results were uncomfortable but specific - I was inconsistent in performance feedback, I managed stress visibly in ways that affected team morale, and I did not adapt my communication style to different team members. This 4-book combo addressed all three blind spots directly. Jamie Turner's Better gave me the stress management tools my team had noticed I was lacking. Dr. Picardi's Leadership Essentials gave me the style adaptation framework my inconsistent approach needed. Vic Clesceri's OB Essentials helped me understand the team member differences I was not accommodating. Jaquina Gilbert's HRM Essentials gave me the performance feedback framework I had been improvising around.

The Four Books I Wish Had Existed 20 Years Ago

I have spent 22 years in management and leadership roles across banking, insurance, and financial technology. I have read hundreds of management books in that time. This 4-book combo is what I wish had existed and been available to me when I was promoted to my first management role at 31. Jamie Turner's Better addresses the personal development foundation that most management books assume rather than build. Dr. Carrie Picardi's Leadership Essentials - the work of an industrial/organizational psychologist with genuine academic and consulting credentials - provides the leadership science foundation that most management training glosses over. Vic Clesceri's OB Essentials provides the team and organizational behavior framework that most managers develop slowly through experience. Jaquina Gilbert's HRM Essentials provides the HR functional knowledge that managers need from day one. A genuinely complete management library.

I Keep Extra Copies of This Combo for Clients Who Need It Immediately

I coach professionals in career transitions, first management roles, and leadership development. This 4-book combo is so consistently useful across so many client situations that I keep a small supply on hand for clients who need to begin reading immediately rather than waiting for shipping. Jamie Turner's Better addresses the mindset and performance dimensions that affect every professional transition. Dr. Picardi's Leadership Essentials addresses the behavioral leadership questions that first-time managers universally face. Vic Clesceri's OB Essentials addresses the team and organizational dynamics that career transitioners consistently underestimate. Jaquina Gilbert's HRM Essentials addresses the formal HR systems that new managers are expected to navigate without being taught. Four books, every client situation covered.

Better and Leadership Essentials Transformed My Client Relationships

I lead a customer success team and my role is as much about managing client relationships as it is about managing direct reports. Jamie Turner's Four Ms Framework - particularly the Mentoring section's communication and relationship-building techniques - transformed how I approach both categories of relationship. Dr. Picardi's Leadership Essentials gave me a framework for adapting my communication style to different client personalities and contexts in ways I had previously been doing intuitively without consistency. Vic Clesceri's OB Essentials helped me understand the organizational dynamics on the client side that were shaping our relationship outcomes. Jaquina Gilbert's HRM Essentials helped me build stronger feedback and development practices for my own team.

The Combo That Elevated Our Talent Development Strategy

I lead talent development for a mid-size technology company. Our previous management development approach was a catalog of individual workshops without a coherent developmental framework. This 4-book combo gave us the framework. Jamie Turner's Better established personal effectiveness as the foundation. Dr. Picardi's Leadership Essentials established leadership behavioral competency as the next layer. Vic Clesceri's OB Essentials established team and organizational literacy as the third layer. Jaquina Gilbert's HRM Essentials established functional HR knowledge as the fourth layer. Our new management development curriculum is built on this four-layer architecture and is producing measurably stronger managers than our previous approach generated.

The I/O Psychology Grounding Makes Leadership Essentials Stand Apart

Dr. Carrie Picardi's Leadership Essentials is the most scientifically grounded introductory leadership book I have encountered. Her background as an I/O psychologist with over 20 years of professional experience producing a tenure-track professor of management means she writes about leadership with both research rigor and practical depth. The leadership styles framework she presents is grounded in validated behavioral research rather than in the inspirational leadership mythology that populates most of this category. As someone who holds a psychology background and was skeptical about entering management literature, her book changed my perspective. The three companion books in this combo all benefit from that same commitment to grounded, practical content.

This Combo Is the Practical Application Layer My MBA Was Missing

MBA programs teach management theory with intellectual rigor and practical detachment. This 4-book combo provides the application layer that translates theory into behavior. Jamie Turner's Better is the most practical personal leadership development resource I have encountered anywhere. Dr. Picardi's Leadership Essentials connects I/O psychology research to the leadership behaviors that actually matter in practice. Vic Clesceri's OB Essentials makes organizational behavior theory immediately applicable to real team and workplace situations. Jaquina Gilbert's HRM Essentials gives aspiring managers the HR process knowledge that MBA programs assume without teaching. I used all four as supplements to my MBA coursework and they consistently made the course content more useful.

Read This at 24 and It Changed Everything About My Career Trajectory

My older sister gave me this combo when I started my first professional job at 24. I read all four books in three months and they fundamentally changed how I think about my professional development. Jamie Turner's Better gave me a framework for managing my own performance and stress that I wish every young professional received before their first job. Dr. Picardi's Leadership Essentials made me understand that leadership is something you learn systematically, not a personality trait you either have or lack. Vic Clesceri's OB Essentials made office dynamics and team behavior feel understandable rather than random. Jaquina Gilbert's HRM Essentials taught me how HR systems work from the employee side, which has already helped me navigate two difficult professional situations with greater clarity.

Required Reading for Every New People Manager in Our Organization

As COO I have significant influence over the management development resources we provide to our 250 managers. This 4-book combo is now required reading for every new people manager before they complete their 90-day onboarding period. Jamie Turner's credentials - CNN contributor, Emory University lecturer, keynote speaker for Coca-Cola and Microsoft - give Better credibility with skeptical senior hires. Dr. Picardi's I/O psychology background gives Leadership Essentials the scientific grounding our analytically oriented engineering managers need. Vic Clesceri's OB content gives new managers the team dynamics framework we expect them to apply. Jaquina Gilbert's HRM Essentials ensures every manager understands the employment and performance management systems they operate within.

Used the OB Book to Rebuild a Dysfunctional Team

I inherited a team of nine people who had been through three managers in eighteen months. Trust was low, collaboration was minimal, and performance was declining. Vic Clesceri's Organizational Behavior Essentials gave me the diagnostic framework I needed. His treatment of how trust forms and erodes in groups, how repeated leadership inconsistency creates defensive behavioral patterns, and what specific conditions allow teams to rebuild after dysfunction was directly applicable to my situation. The practical guidance on personality and behavioral assessment helped me understand what each team member needed to re-engage. Eight months after applying this framework alongside Dr. Picardi's communication techniques, the team's performance metrics and engagement scores were both significantly improved.

Gave Me the Language to Be a True Business Partner

HR business partners are expected to advise managers on people strategy, organizational design, and leadership effectiveness. Delivering on that expectation requires knowledge across all four domains this combo covers. Jamie Turner's Better and Dr. Picardi's Leadership Essentials gave me the language and framework to have developmental conversations with managers about their own leadership effectiveness. Vic Clesceri's OB Essentials gave me the organizational behavior framework to diagnose team dynamics challenges. Jaquina Gilbert's HRM Essentials reinforced my own functional knowledge while giving me content I could recommend to the managers I support. The combo elevated my HRBP practice more than any professional development program I have completed.

K
Karthikeya Iyer (India)
Clesceri's Motivation Framework Transformed My Team's Performance

Vic Clesceri's chapter on motivation in Organizational Behavior Essentials is the most practically transformative management content I have encountered. His treatment of motivation not as a personality trait or an attitude but as a dynamic outcome of environmental conditions, goal clarity, feedback quality, and psychological safety changed how I design work for my team entirely. I restructured how we set goals, how I provide feedback, and how I acknowledge progress based directly on the frameworks in that chapter. Within one quarter my team's output quality and self-reported engagement both improved measurably. The three companion books gave me the leadership, HR, and personal development context to sustain and build on that improvement.

The Combo That Helped Me Lead Authentically in a Male-Dominated Industry

I am a senior woman manager in the infrastructure sector, a field where leadership norms still skew heavily toward command-and-control styles that do not reflect my natural approach. Dr. Carrie Picardi's Leadership Essentials gave me a research-based framework that validated collaborative, relationship-oriented leadership as genuinely effective rather than merely preferable. Vic Clesceri's OB Essentials addressed gender and cultural dimensions of workplace dynamics directly and practically. Jamie Turner's Better gave me the mindset framework to lead confidently rather than performing someone else's leadership style. The combination of I/O psychology rigor and practical framework across these four books gave me tools I had been searching for throughout my career.

B

Finally Connected People Management to Operational Performance

I have spent my career focused on processes, systems, and operational metrics. People management always felt like a separate domain with different rules. This 4-book combo permanently corrected that separation in my thinking. Jamie Turner's neuroscience-based treatment of stress, motivation, and performance made the connection between individual psychological states and operational outcomes explicit. Vic Clesceri's OB Essentials showed me how team dynamics directly determine operational performance regardless of how good the processes are. Dr. Picardi's leadership frameworks gave me specific behavioral tools for improving team effectiveness. Jaquina Gilbert's HRM content provided the formal performance management structure that sustains those improvements over time.

Educational Leaders Need This Library Too

School principals manage complex organizations with significant people leadership demands and almost no formal management training in their professional preparation. This 4-book combo addressed the management knowledge gaps I had carried for 11 years of school leadership. Dr. Picardi's Leadership Essentials gave me a research framework for understanding my leadership style and its effects on my staff. Vic Clesceri's OB Essentials explained the team dynamics I had been navigating intuitively - understanding them explicitly made my interventions more effective. Jaquina Gilbert's HRM Essentials gave me formal frameworks for performance conversations I had been handling inconsistently. Jamie Turner's Better helped me manage the personal stress of school leadership more skillfully.

This Combo Built My HR Career Foundation in Six Months

I joined an HR department as a generalist coordinator two years after graduating, with a business administration degree and no formal HR education. Jaquina Gilbert's HRM Essentials was the most immediately valuable book I have read in my career - her SHRM and PHR certification background is evident in the depth and accuracy of the HR content, and her 20 years of practical HR experience makes every framework concrete rather than theoretical. Vic Clesceri's OB Essentials gave me the organizational behavior foundation that HR generalists need to be effective business partners. Dr. Picardi's Leadership Essentials and Jamie Turner's Better gave me the personal and leadership development context that makes HR advisory more credible and practical.

All Four Books Generate Rich Workshop Material

I facilitate leadership development workshops for corporate clients across financial services, healthcare, and manufacturing. This 4-book combo has become my primary source material for a modular management development program. Jamie Turner's Four Ms Framework generates productive self-assessment and peer discussion. Dr. Picardi's leadership styles content produces the most valuable workshop activity I have encountered - participants identify their natural style, map it to team members' styles, and design specific behavioral adjustments. Vic Clesceri's OB content generates substantive team dynamics case discussions. Jaquina Gilbert's HRM content produces the most practically relevant workshop outputs because participants can apply her frameworks in their current roles immediately.

Applies Directly to Clinical Team Management - Unexpectedly Useful

I manage a clinical nursing team and was uncertain whether a management combo aimed at general professional audiences would address the specific dynamics of healthcare team leadership. Every book in this set translated directly to my context. Jamie Turner's stress management content is essential for any healthcare professional - the neuroscience of chronic stress is particularly relevant to clinical environments. Dr. Picardi's leadership styles framework helped me understand why my directive approach worked in emergencies and alienated my team in routine operations. Vic Clesceri's team dynamics content addressed the interprofessional team challenges that are unique to clinical settings. Jaquina Gilbert's HRM content gave me tools for the performance conversations clinical managers avoid.

The OB and HRM Books Are the Foundation Our Analytics Work Needed

I lead a people analytics function and have always found that our data insights were underutilized because the managers we presented them to lacked the organizational behavior framework to interpret them correctly. Vic Clesceri's Organizational Behavior Essentials and Jaquina Gilbert's HRM Essentials in this combo addressed exactly that literacy gap. OB Essentials gave managers the framework for understanding what the data about team dynamics, engagement, and performance is describing. HRM Essentials gave them the HR process knowledge to act on the data's implications. Jamie Turner's Better and Dr. Picardi's Leadership Essentials gave them the personal and leadership foundation to use both books effectively.

The Four Books That Helped Me Scale From 8 to 40 People Without Chaos

My company grew from 8 to 40 employees in fourteen months. Every management challenge I had anticipated - hiring, onboarding, team structure, performance management, conflict resolution - arrived simultaneously and at a scale I was not ready for. I worked through this combo during that period and each book addressed a specific dimension of what I was facing. Turner's Better kept me functioning personally under the stress of hypergrowth. Picardi's Leadership Essentials helped me adapt my leadership approach as teams became too large for direct management. Clesceri's OB Essentials helped me understand the team dynamics that were emerging without my intention. Gilbert's HRM Essentials gave me the formal HR processes I needed before I needed them urgently.

The Four Books That Made Business School Actually Practical

Business school provides theoretical frameworks and case study analysis. What it rarely provides is a practical guide to what managing people actually feels like and requires. This combo filled that gap more effectively than any coursework I completed. Jamie Turner's Four Ms Framework - Mindset, Mentoring, Managing Stress, Maximizing Performance - is the most actionable personal leadership framework I have encountered anywhere. Dr. Picardi's leadership styles content gave me vocabulary for something I had only understood intuitively. Vic Clesceri's OB content made organizational behavior theory feel applicable rather than academic. Jaquina Gilbert's HRM content gave me the employment and performance management knowledge that business school assumes without teaching.
